Charleston, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to the University of Charleston 84-52. The Big Blue fall to 6-5 on the year (0-1 CIAA).
The Golden Eagles took the early lead, scoring the first eight points of the matchup. The Big Blue scored eight points in the first quarter with layups by Tianna Rhodes, Jasmine Jenkins, and two from Azahrey Drayton-Gill to go into the second trailing 24-8.
Midway through the quarter, the Golden Eagles built an 18-point lead. A jumper from Drayton-Gill broke up the Golden Eagles' offense, but Charleston would answer to build their lead to 25 with one-minute left in the second. A jumper from Big Blue Caiyiah Smith cut the Golden Eagles lead to 23 going into the half.
After a turnover by the Golden Eagles, a midrange jumper from Jayla Sample pulled the Big Blue within 18 midway through the third. The Golden Eagles closed out the quarter on an 8-1 run to take the 62-37 lead into the fourth over the Big Blue.
A three from Angel Walker and a jumper from Aniyah Vanhook pushed the Big Blue to 42, but the Golden Eagles answered with seven points to extend their lead to 29. The Golden Eagles had their largest lead of the night at 36 with 1:26 left to play. A three from Walker delivered the final points of the night with the Big Blue falling to the Golden Eagles, 84-52.
Walker led the Big Blue with 12 points, with Jenkins and Azareya Drayton-Gill coming away with 10 each. Jenkins led the Big Blue with 10 rebounds on the night.
