Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball took down Virginia State University 64-49 on Wednesday. The Big Blue improve to 12-10 (6-7 CIAA) with the Trojans moving to 18-4 (10-4 CIAA).
After trading opening buckets, the Trojans scored four in a row to take the 8-4 lead. Facing a three-point deficit with 33 seconds left in the first quarter, a three from Gabrielle Thomas tied it up at 17 to go into the second. The Trojans scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but a trip to the line for Shalance Montoya and a layup from Jayla Sample gave the Big Blue the 21-19 lead. At the 3:30 mark, another bucket from Jayla Sample put the Big Blue up by two, but two free throws for the Trojans took them into the half tied at 28.
The Trojans would open the third with a three, but the Big Blue would score the next 14 points to build a lead of 11. The Trojans would pull within single digits of the Big Blue, but two free throws from Katrina Davis took the Big Blue into the final quarter with the 11-point lead. The Trojans would get as close as six, but the Big Blue would close out the fourth with nine consecutive points to come away with the 64-49 victory over the Trojans.
Davis led all scorers with 16 points, six rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block. Sample added 15 points and nine rebounds with Thomas having 11 points and Montoya with ten.
