Bluefield, VA – Bluefield State University softball broke a nine-year losing streak against Bluefield University with an 18-5 on Tuesday. In game two, the Big Blue fell to the Rams 8-1.
Paige Whittington led off the inning with a single, followed by a single from Lexi Shadowens. Calla Cooksey cleared the bases with a double to left field to get the Big Blue the early lead. The Rams added one in the bottom of the inning, but the Big Blue extended their lead with three more in the second.
Bella Coffman hit a lead-off single, followed later by a single from La'Naeyah Ayers. Whittington put the ball into play and brought Coffman home. Cooksey had her second double of the game to bring in Shadowens and Whittington. Going into the seventh with the 11-4 lead, the Big Blue pulled away, scoring seven in the top of the sixth. In the sixth inning, Madison Roland (2), Maggie Mullin, Julianna Castanzo, Whittington, Shadowens, and Emma Crawford each collected hits to secure the 18-5 victory.
Taylor Fells got the win in the circle for the Big Blue throwing three innings, giving up four hits, two runs, one walk and striking out one.
In game two, the Big Blue got on the board in the fourth after Shadowens reached on a Rams error and was later brought home by Cooksey. The Rams answered in the bottom of the inning to even the score at one. After the Rams took the lead in the fifth, they pulled away in the sixth scoring six runs on seven hits to take the 8-1 victory.
