Big Blue Split Day Two in Montreat, NC

Montreat, NC – Bluefield State University softball secured their first win of the season over Alice Lloyd 16-7 and fell to Montreat College 11-6 on Saturday.

The Big Blue got on the board first after Paige Whittington got on base and advanced to second on an error. After Valeria Rivera grounded out to third and Whittington moved to third, Madison Roland doubled down the left field line to bring Whittington home. Alice Lloyd took the lead in the bottom of the inning, 2-1, and added another in the third to extend their lead 3-1. The Big Blue evened the score in the fourth 3-3. Roland doubled to center field to start the inning followed by Bella Coffman with a single to right field. Later in the inning, Emma Crawford grounded out but brought Roland home for the Big Blue. Coffman stole home to even the score at 3. Alice Lloyd tacked on one to take back the lead, but the Big Blue scored nine runs in fifth to take the 12-5. Alice Lloyd added three more runs, but the Big Blue sealed the game with a four-run inning in the seventh.

Whittington doubled down the third base line to start game two. Later, Roland singled to right field to bring Whittington home to take the early lead. Montreat answered in the bottom of the inning with four to take the lead. The Cavaliers extended their lead with two in the second and four in the third. Calla Cooksey started the fourth with a double to right center. Later Cooksey scored after Lexi Shadowens reached on an error. Roland singled up the middle to bring one across the plate and later scored. Both teams went scoreless through the next two innings. The Big Blue added one in the seventh, but wasn't enough to take down the Cavaliers.

The Big Blue will host Alice Lloyd in a double header contest Saturday, February 10th in their home opener starting at 1 p.m.
