Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's and men's basketball were taken down by Concord University on Monday. Women's basketball fell 72-53 and men's 82-72.
Jayla Sample led the Big Blue with 16 points followed by Shalance Montoya with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Sample started the scoring for the night with a midrange bucket to take the lead. At the 6:21 mark, the Big Blue built a lead of seven. The Mountain Lions went on an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter to cut the Big Blue lead to one. Both teams traded buckets to open the second quarter. A layup and a trip to the line for Montoya gave the Big Blue the three-point lead. Later in the quarter, the Big Blue scored six consecutive to extend their lead to ten. The Mountain Lions scored four to cut the Big Blue lead to six going into the half.
At the 6:56 mark, the Mountain Lions evened the score at 37. A jumper from Alexyss Newman with 42 seconds in the third pulled the Big Blue within one, but a bucket from the Mountain Lions extended their lead to three going into the final quarter. The Mountain Lions scoring 16 points in a row to take the 60-42. The Mountain Lions outscored the Big Blue 28-12 in the final quarter to take down the Big Blue 82-72.
In the second game of the night, Travon Cooper and Chase Page led the Big Blue with 16 points and four rebounds.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Midway through the half, a three from Chase Page pulled the Big Blue within two (14-12). The Big Blue took their first lead of the night at the 7:41 mark after a layup from Jaylen Bernard. After the score was tied twice at 20 and 22, a layup from Ja'Mere Redus put the Big Blue ahead by two. The Mountain Lions scored the next six points, but two free throws from Hinds and a layup from Bernard tied it up at 28 with two minutes left in the first half. With 57 seconds left, two good free throws by Cooper pulled the Big Blue within one. A layup by the Mountain Lions put them ahead by three going into the half.
The Mountain Lions came out of the half and scored the first seven points to extend their lead to ten. A free throw from Cooper pulled the Big Blue within six, but the Mountain Lions scored the next six to push their lead to 12. The Big Blue pulled within five after a trip to the line for Page, but could not get any closer, falling 82-72.
