Big Blue Hand Virginia State First Conference Loss

Petersburg, VA – Bluefield State University softball split the day with Virginia State University on Sunday. In game one, the Big Blue fell 3-1 but bounced back to take game two 7-3.

The Trojans scored two in the second and one in the fourth to take the 3-0 lead. In the fifth, Paige Whittington doubled to left center, followed by a single down the left field line by Lexi Shadowens to bring Whittington home. The Big Blue had one in scoring position in the seventh but weren't able to bring any across the plate, falling 3-1.

Taylor Fells threw the complete game, giving up five hits, three runs, nine walks, and struck out three.

The Big Blue got on the board early in game two, scoring three in the first inning. Whittington led off with a single and later stole a second to move into scoring position. Calla Cooksey doubled to right center to bring in Whittington. Back-to-back singles from Bella Coffman and Madison Roland brought in one for the Big Blue. Maggie Mullin extended the Big Blue lead, 3-0. With a runner in scoring position in the second, Valeria Rivera singled to left field to push the Big Blue lead 4-0. The Trojans pulled within one after a three-run sixth inning, but the Big Blue answered in the seventh with three runs on three hits to secure the 7-3 victory over Virginia State.

Mullin earned the win in the circle for the Big Blue, throwing six innings, giving up eight hits, three runs, two walks, and struck out two.

The Big Blue will travel to Lincoln University (Pa.) Friday, April 19th, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
