Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – After going into halftime tied 2-2, the Big Blue scored two goals in the second half to push past Carolina University on Thursday at Truist Sports Park.
Big Blue Sayen Santana scored two pivotal goals in the first half to keep the game tight as the teams entered the break tied at 2-2. Santana opened the scoring early at the 14:19 mark, only to see Carolina respond with at 35:39 and 40:27. However, just eight seconds later, Santana struck again, leveling the game before halftime.
In the second half, Bluefield State's defense held firm, and the offense found a higher gear. Raquel Leonardo's goal just 82 seconds into the half (46:22) gave the Big Blue the lead. Then, Carmen Galante sealed the victory with a strike at 58:27.
Goalkeeper Kaycee Coty was a standout performer between the posts, making 11 saves to frustrate Carolina's relentless attack, which produced 21 shots. Despite Carolina's pressure and 10 corner kicks, Bluefield State held strong.
"Our growth over these last games has been incredible and we learned some tough lessons. The team's commitment to staying positive, trusting the process, and pushing through adversity really shone, especially with this road win against a very athletic and determined Carolina University team," said head coach Gene Smith. "Everyone showed tremendous resilience and belief in each other. This kind of performance is a reflection of the hard work we put in, and it's a great step forward for us as we continue building our program."
