Spartanburg, SC – Bluefield State University softball took down Johnson C. Smith 9-1 and fell to Edward Waters University 14-13.
Game One vs. Johnson C. Smith – 9-1 W
The Golden Bulls scored one in the first, but the Big Blue answered in the bottom of the inning with three of their own. Lexi Shadowens homered to left center to even the score at one. A single from Janessah Nappi brought home Madison Roland, who tripled earlier in the inning. A single from Maggie Mullin to center field brough home Nappi to take the 3-1 lead. Mikaylah Chimara extended the Big Blue lead with a single that brought home two in the third. The Big Blue pushed their lead to eight after a homerun from Paige Whittington brought two across the plate and a sacrifice fly from Nappi brought home Shadowens. The Big Blue forced the run rule victory after a single from Lauryn DeGuzman brought home the ninth run for the Big Blue.
Taylor Fells picked up the win in the circle, throwing 4 innings giving up one hit, five walks and struck out seven. Jackie Sandy threw two innings for the Big Blue, giving up one hit and struck out four.
Game Two vs. Edward Waters – 14-13 L
Despite trailing 12-4 after four innings, the Big Blue exploded with seven runs in the sixth to even the score at 13. Edward Waters answered in the seventh with one run to take the lead and held off the Big Blue in the bottom of the inning to secure the 14-13 victory.
The Big Blue had 17 hits in game two with Whittington, Shadowens and Nappi each collecting three hits. In the circle, Sandy collected the loss, throwing three innings giving up 10 hits, one walk and struck out one. Fells threw four innings, giving up six hits two walks and struck out four.
Up Next: The Big Blue will take part in the Glenville State Round Robin Feburary 22nd - 23rd, kicking it off with games against West Virginia State University and University of Charleston.
