Wise, VA – Bluefield State University baseball opened the 2025 season at UVA Wise over the weekend. The Big Blue dropped the weekend to the Cavilers, 3-7, 1-23, 6-10, and 1-15.
Game One – 7-3 L
The Big Blue scored the first run of the season after a single up the middle from Caleb Roofe brought home James Germosen who singled to left center earlier in the inning. The Big Blue added to their lead in the third after a single up the middle from Kevin Rodriguez drove in Andrew Scarberry and Anderson Moreno. The Cavaliers got on the board in the bottom of the inning and added six runs in the fifth to take the 7-3 victory. Sophomore pitcher Grayson Peel collected the loss on the mound for the Big Blue. Peel threw 4.1 innings and gave up seven hits, four runs, one walk, and struck out three.
Game Two – 23-1 L
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead scoring one in the first and second inning. The Big Blue cut the lead to one after a single from Rodriguez brought home Moreno, who drew the walk. The Cavaliers pulled away from the Big Blue, scoring one in the third, seven in the fourth, and 13 in the sixth inning. Will Austin was given the loss on the mound for the Big Blue, throwing 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, five runs, four walks, and striking out one.
Game Three – 10-6 L
The Big Blue loaded the bases in the first after two singles from Angel Martinez and Germosen followed by a walk from Sabastian Ortega. Rodriguez brought in the first run after a single through the left side, and later, Scarberry reached base on a Cavalier error to bring in the second run of the inning for the Big Blue. The Cavaliers evened the score by adding two at the bottom of the inning and added four more at the third and fourth innings. The Big Blue added three runs in the fifth through a walk, wild pitch, and sacrifice fly, but wasn't able to tack on more, falling 10-6.
Game Four – 15-1 L
The Big Blue fell in game four 15-1. The lone run for the Big Blue came in the fourth inning after Martinez led off the inning with a double to left field and later moved to third. Ortega singled to second to bring home Martinez to put the Big Blue on the board. Moreno, Martinez, Ortega, Germosen, Scarberry, and Nick Diaz each collected one hit.
