Bluefield, VA - Bluefield State University softball swept Southern Virginia University 4-3 and 13-5.
Game One - 4-3 W
The Big Blue got on the board in the first after
Paige Whittington led off the inning with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch and later scored. The Knights scored three in the second to take the 3-1 lead. After back-to-back singles from
Julianna Costanzo and
Jackie Sandy,
Janessah Nappi singled to left center to bring home Costanzo. Whittington singled to bring home the tying run for the Big Blue, 3-3.
Maggie Mullin drew the lead off walk in the third, later moved to second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Stepping in as a pitch hitter,
La'Naeyah Ayers singled to right field to bring home the go ahead run.
Natalie Quezada earned the win for the Big Blue. Quezada threw the complete game, giving up seven hits, three runs, two walks and struck out two.
Game Two - 13-5 W
Whittington and
Mikaylah Chimara led off the first with singles. After a double steal to move both runners into scoring position.
Lexi Shadowens singled to right field to put the Big Blue ahead 2-0. The Big Blue began to pull away in the second with a five run inning. Ayers led off with a walk and advance on a sacrific bunt from
Taylor Fells. After Nappi was hit by the pitch, Whittington singled to left center to load the bases. Ayers scored on a passed ball, 3-0. Sandy reached on an error, scoring two to extend the lead 5-0. Shadowens doubled to left field to bring home one, followed by a single from Mullin to bring home Shadowens, 7-0.
The Knights pulled within two in the fourth, but a Shoadowens homerun to left field pushed the Big Blue lead 9-5 in the bottom of the inning. Fells drew the two out walk in the fifth and was brought home off of a double from Nappi. Whittington drove in the 11th run for the Big Blue with a triple to center field. With runners on first and third, Ayers doubled to drive hometwo for the Big Blue to secure the 13-5 run rule victory.
Taylor Fells collected the win in the circle, throwing the complete game, giving up three hits, five runs seven walks and struck out nine.
