Big Blue Fall to Carolina University

Winston-Salem, NC – Bluefield State University softball fell to Carolina University 7-6 and 7-5.

Game One – 7-6 L

The Big Blue got on board early, scoring one in the first. Paige Whittington led off the inning with a single to the pitcher and later stole second. Later in the inning, Lexi Shadowens singled to left field to bring home Whittington. The Big Blue extended their lead in the fifth after a lead off walk from Mikaylah Chimara and double by Julianna Costanzo brought home one. Shadowens doubled down the left field line to push the Big Blue lead 3-0.

The Bruins evened the score in the bottom of the inning, 3-3. The Bruins took their first lead of the day in the sixth, 5-3. The Big Blue battled back in the 7th to take back the lead. Chimara and Whittington led off with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position. Costanzo singled up the middle to add two for the Big Blue. Later in the inning, Shadowens singled to left field to bring home Costanzo to take the lead 6-5. The Bruins evened the score in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings. The Bruins brought oen across the plate in the bottom of the 8th to secure the 7-6 victory over the Big Blue.

Maggie Mullins threw 5.1 innings for the Big Blue, giving up eight hits, five runs and two walks. Taylor Fells collected the loss, throwing 2.1 innings, giving up three hits, two runs and struck out three.

Game Two – 7-5 L

Whittington led off the game with a bunt single to the pitcher and stole second to move into scoring position. After Costanzo was hit by the pitch to get on base, Jackie Sandy reached on a Bruins error to score Whittington. The Bruins evened the score in the bottom of the inning, 1-1. The Bruins took the lead in the second after adding four, 5-1. In the third, Shadowens reached first on an error, followed a stolen base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Chimara collected the RBI after a sacrifice bunt, 5-2.

The Bruins added two in the third to extend their lead 7-2. Down 7-3 going into the 7th, the Big Blue attempted to rally, adding two but could not overcome the Bruins 7-5.

Taylor Fells and Natalie Quezada each threw three innings, with Fells getting the loss in the circle.
