Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University volleyball team delivered a strong performance Thursday evening, sweeping Claflin University 3-0 at Ned Shott Gymnasium. The Big Blue improve to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in the CIAA.
Bluefield State came out strong in the opening set, taking control with a 25-15 victory. Claflin responded with a stronger effort in the second set, but the Big Blue maintained their composure to secure a close 25-22 win. Bluefield State carried that momentum into the third set, closing out the match 25-20 to complete the sweep.
Callesta Styles led the Big Blue offensively with nine kills, recording an impressive .727 hitting percentage and adding two service aces.
Tessa Heffner played a key role in setting up the attack, finishing with a team-high 20 assists, while Mekenna Scott added 17 assists. Danielle Robinson also made an impact from the service line with three aces.
As a team, Bluefield State finished with 42 kills, 39 assists, 12 service aces, and 42 digs. The Big Blue held Claflin to a .141 hitting percentage while recording a .196 hitting percentage of their own.
With the victory, Bluefield State moves back to the .500 mark in conference play as the Big Blue look to build on their momentum moving forward.
