Big Blue Claim Series Over Bluefield University

Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University claimed the three-game series against Bluefield University. Earlier in the season, the Big Blue took the 8-1 win over the Rams. The Rams bounced back to take game two 11-9 on Tuesday, but the Big Blue secured the series with a 9-3 win on Wednesday.

Going into the third tied 1-1, the Big Blue brought five runs across the plate to take the 6-1 lead. The rally was sparked by an RBI single from Anderson Moreno, followed by back-to-back RBI extra-base hits – a triple from Kevin Rodriguez and a double from Edwin Hernandez. Angel Martinez capped the inning with an RBI single.

The Rams evened the score 6-6 after a four-run fourth inning, but the Big Blue regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI double from Nick Diaz. Bluefield University answered with two in the bottom of the inning and three in the seventh to pull ahead 11-7. The Big Blue attempted a late comeback with an RBI singles from Rodriguez in the eighth and Nate Rollins in the ninth, but fell short.

Rodriguez led the Big Blue with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs. Andy Williams took the loss on the mound, throwing 1.1 inning, allowing two hits, two runs, and one walk while striking out one.

The Big Blue jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to secure the series victory. After taking a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from James Germosen, the Big Blue added three in the third to highlighted by a two-RBI single from Diaz.

Angel Martinez extended the lead in the fifth with a two-run home run to right field. The Big Blue added insurance runs in the sixth on an Edwin Hernandez RBI single and in the eighth after a triple from Blake McKinney was brought home on a sacrifice bunt.

McKinney, Diaz, Hernandez and Allison Carson all collected multiple hits in the win. Alex Compton secured the win on the mound, facing four batters, allowing zero hits while striking out one.
