His transition to the NFL was marked by a historic rookie season with the Detroit Lions, where he rushed for 1,133 yards, joining the elite ranks of Lions legends Barry Sanders and Billy Sims. This achievement made him one of only three running backs in the franchise's history to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in their debut season, and his performance earned him the honor of being named an alternate for the Pro Bowl.
