Lawrence Robinson joined Bluefield State Football as the first Defensive Backs coach after the program was relaunched in fall 2020. Coach Robinson comes to BSUÂ following his time with the Allegheny football staff in February 2019 after breaking into the collegiate ranks serving as a Defensive Quality Control on a William and Mary (FCS) that finished nationally ranked in Total Defense (45), Pass Efficiency (40), Pass Yards Allowed (25), and Scoring Defense (47). Â Â
In his first season at Allegheny, the pass defense improved from 233 yards per game and 20 pass touchdowns in 2018 to198 yards per game and 15 pass touchdowns in 2019. Also during that season, Quinten Hunt earned 2nd Team All-NCAC as a Defensive Back and earned All-Region Honors finishing 4th in the NCAA with four blocked kicks. Outside of football, Coach Robinson was a member of the minority student-athlete mentorship called Brother 2 Brother.
Prior to William & Mary, he spent five years at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, beginning as the defensive coordinator before eventually being elevated to assistant head coach. He also held the position of Assistant Athletic Director and Admissions Counselor before being promoted to Associate Director of Admissions. He broke into coaching at Christchurch School in Virginia serving as the Co-Offensive coordinator. Over a dozen athletes would go on to play football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse across the Division I to Division III levels.
As a student-athlete, Robinson was a four-year letter winner at Safety at NCAA Division II West Liberty (W. Va.). He was a team captain during his senior season of 2011, and claimed Honorable Mention All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) honors in 2009, the same season the Hilltoppers made the Super Region 1 final.
Coach Robinson graduated from West Liberty in 2011 with a degree in Business Administration and completed his Master's in Athletic Administration from Ohio University in the Spring of 2019.
