Rashard Alston

Bluefield State University is thrilled to announce Rashard Alston as the new Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for the upcoming season. With an impressive background in coaching and a proven track record of success, Alston is set to lead the Big Blue football team to new heights.

Having served as Associate Head Coach and Co-offensive Coordinator in 2022, Alston was pivotal in the team's explosive passing attack. Under his guidance, four different receivers achieved remarkable performances, recording multiple 100-yard games or scoring two touchdowns in a single game. Notably, three of Bluefield State's Wideouts finished in the top 25 in Division II statistical categories, showcasing Alston's ability to develop top-tier talent.

Among the standout players, freshman duo Khyon Smith and Timothy Henderson significantly impacted last season. Smith ranked an impressive #4, while Henderson secured the #19 spot nationally for yards per reception. Additionally, sophomore Perry Wilder III, hailing from Summerville, SC, made his mark by finishing #9 in the nation for receptions per game. He even broke a school record with 13 receptions in the season opener against now conference rival Johnson C. Smith University.

Alston joined the Big Blue coaching staff in 2021 as the Running Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Not only did he contribute to building the roster for the first Bluefield State Football team in over four decades, but he was also appointed Director of Football Operations, showcasing his organizational prowess.

Before joining Bluefield State, Alston gained valuable experience as an Offensive Graduate Assistant at Hastings College. Over two seasons, from 2018 to 2020, he honed his coaching skills by working with wide receivers and guiding them to All-Conference Honors. Notably, he coached receiver Keiotey Stenhouse, who became the first wide receiver in over a decade to be named to an All-Conference team for the Hastings College Broncos. He broke a school record with 12 receptions in a single game in 2019.

Before embarking on his coaching career, Alston showcased his skills on the field as a running back and linebacker at Newberry College from 2013 to 2017. During his time with the Wolves, the team achieved three playoff appearances, including an undefeated conference schedule and a conference championship in 2016.

Alston's dedication to the sport was recognized in 2014 when he was selected to represent the USA Football U19 team in the IFAF World Cup held in Kuwait City, Kuwait. The team emerged victorious, securing gold medals after defeating formidable opponents such as Japan, Germany, Mexico, and Canada.

With his wealth of experience, passion for the game, and proven ability to develop talent, Rashard is poised to make a significant impact at Bluefield State University. The Big Blue football team eagerly anticipates the upcoming season under Alston's guidance, ready to take on new challenges and reach new heights of success.
