Big Blues Struggle in the Bitter Cold of Tennessee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Jefferson City, TN- The Big Blues struggled in the bitter cold today as they took on the Carson Newman Eagles in a double header that was originally supposed to be a home contest for the Big Blues. But weather forced the Blues to hit the road and played a very good Carson Newman squad. The first game ended 15-4 and the second 8-0 in favor of the Eagles.

The first game saw its fair share of poor fielding as Bluefield State and Carson Newman committed a combined 11 errors. Unfortunately for the Blues the errors committed were far more costly than the ones committed by Carson Newman. The Eagles pounced on the Blues early, getting 5 runs in each of the first 3 innings. Amanda Cokeley was in the circle for the Big Blues and has a real hard time locating her spots. She gave up 15 runs on 14 hits but recorded 2 strikeouts. But it should be noted that she was not getting very much help behind her as all 5 of the runs in the first inning were unearned.

On the offensive side of the ball the Big Blues started looking a little better compared to earlier this season. All 4 runs for the Ladies came in the top of the 4th inning as they kept putting the ball in play to make Carson Newman's defense make plays. The Blues took advantage of some mistakes and Leandrea Armbrister was able to get 2 RBIs in the half inning.

The second game was a lot closer than the score indicates. Bluefield State put Roseanne De Vries in the circle for her second start of the season and she had a strong 3.2 innings. For the day she gave up 6 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts. But the game was 1-0 in favor of the Eagles through 3.1 innings before a mistake in the outfield opened the flood gates and Carson Newman scored 5. Emily Day came on for relief and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits to make the Eagles total to 8.

The offense that came on late in the 1st game did not carry over to the second as the Big Blues only generated 1 hit through 5 innings of play.

Bluefield State will look to rebound on Monday, March 7th against local rival Concord. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 in this double header series.
