Box Score 2 Athens, WV- The softball team made the trip up to Athens, WV for a midweek DH against local rival Concord. The Big Blues fell in both games by a score of 9-0 and 8-0.
The Big Blues were actually the home team in this contest as the game had to be moved to Concord's Campus because Bluefield State's home field has not been opened for the spring.
In the first game, the Big Blues put Amanda Cokeley in the circle. Amanda went the full game giving up 9 runs on 11 hits but recorded two strikeouts. Amanda started off a little shaky giving up 5 runs through 2 innings but after the 3rd she settled down and pitched well. The Big Blues were not giving her much help on defense as the team committed 4 errors 3 of which directly leaded to Concord runs.
The Big Blues offense was left in Bluefield today as both games saw no runs and very little base runners. In the first game, Shonte Cargill and Kiersten Phillips were the 2 Blues to notch hits but they were unable to get anyway as the offense stalled out each time they got on base.
Game 2 saw the hit total double from Game 1 with Chelsea Duncan getting 2 hits, Leandrea Armbrister and Kayla York each with 1. The pitching in Game 2 for Concord was solid as Sarah Herndon picked up her 5th win with 9 strikeouts.
Emily Day was on the mound for the Big Blues and pitched very well striking out 5 batters in 4 innings of work. Roseanne De Vries came on in relief and also pitched well, tallying 5 strikeouts of her own.
The Blues will go back on the road on Saturday to play Livingstone for a DH at 12:00 and 2:00. Check back here for links to live video and stats!
