Box Score 2 Bluefield, VA- Today saw another exciting installment of the Battle of Bluefield, this time on the softball diamond. Bluefield College was able to come out on top in both contests, winning 2-1 and 10-6.
Game 1 was a great pitcher's duel, which saw Bluefield College take a perfect game into the 6th and a no hitter into the 7th inning. Bluefield College's performance more or less over shadowed the excellent pitching by Amanda Cokeley who started on the mound for the Big Blues Cokeley's performance was once again strong, pitching the complete game, only giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and tallying 3 strikeouts. But this performance was over shadowed by Bluefield College's Alex Bartley who recorded 7 strikeouts and only 1 hit.
The lone hit given up by Bartley was to Amanda Cokeley who was able to break up the "no-no" with one out in the top of the 7th inning.
Game 2 saw the work horse Amanda Cokeley take the mound again. Cokeley ended up going 2 innings as Bluefield College started getting to her. She gave up 6 runs on 5 hits in her quick stint. But being down 6-0 after 2 innings did not deflate the Big Blues, as they battled back scoring 3 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to tie the game. The 5th inning had a crazy series of plays which sparked the Bluefield State comeback. With 2 outs, Emily Day bunted and was about to be tagged out but the first baseman dropped the ball, making everyone safe. But in an effort to make something out of the play, the 1st baseman threw the ball to the shortstop trying to get the out at 2nd. Then the shortstop turned home to try and get Ashantii Darville, but airmailed the throw allowing Darville to score easily. Cokeley came up to bat next and singled scoring Chelsea Duncan.
But the comeback attempt ran out of steam after they were able to tie the game as Bluefield College got 4 more runs in the bottom of the 6th to seal the victory and the sweep, 10-4.
