Blues Swept by Rams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

Bluefield, WV- The Big Blues went on the road to start their 4 game series against the Winston-Salem State Rams. The Big Blues fell 4-2 and 15-1 in 7 inning double headers. The final 2 games of the 4 game series were held in Princeton, WV. But playing at home did not help Bluefield State as they fell 11-3 and 6-1.

Game 1 saw Tanner Muovich take the mound. Muovich pitched well going 5 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. He also had 4 strikeouts for the game. Addison Meeks came on in relief, giving up 1 runs on 3 hits. Offensively, Justin Bowler played well, going 2-2 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Bowler's two RBI's came in the 4th inning, scoring Peyton Durham and Chase Chambers. At the time this gave the Blues the lead until the bottom of the 6th when the Rams were able to plate 3 runs.

Game 2 was not as close as the Big Blues fell apart down the stretch and could not produce any offense due to some excellent pitching by the Rams. The Rams were able to score 13 runs in the final 5 innings including a 6 run 3rd inning to put the game away. Bluefield State was only able to get 2 hits off Seth Reeves, who pitched an absolute gem for WSSU. The lone run he allowed started with an error and eventually scored Chaz Rutherford off a groundout by Peyton Durham.

Game 3 saw Brandon Wortkoetter take to the bump. But much like his previous outings, Wortkoetter did not get much help from his defense as the Big Blues committed 4 errors in the game. Chaz Rutherford came on in relief and went 2.1 innings, giving up no runs on 2 hits and 2 strike outs. Carson Thigpen, Cole Blocker and Billy O'Hara all scored for the game but it was not enough to overcome the final 8 run deficit. The Big Blues were not without base runners, stranding 11 on the game.

The final game of the series did not go the Big Blues way either. Jordan Wilson scored the lone run for Bluefield State after coming on to pinch run for Logan Wriston. Wilson's run came from a Sac Fly by Kevon Moxey in the 6th inning. Cole Blocker started on the mound for Bluefield State with Addison Meeks coming on in relief. In Meeks' second appearance of the season, he performed well, going 4 innings, not giving up a run and only 3 hits.

Bluefield State now goes to East Bank, WV to take on West Virginia Tech in a match up that could have USCAA post season implications for the Big Blues.
