ATHENS, West Virginia - The Bluefield State men's basketball team lost to Concord University in Athens Tuesday night, 92-87.
It was a tough loss against a talented Mountain Lions team.
The Big Blue got off to a quick 5-0 start on a three-pointer by
Hirotaka Ohashi and a dunk by
Jordan Hinds.
The game see-sawed for the next ten minutes when a jumper by
DJ McDonald cut Concord's lead to 24-21 with 9:18 remaining.
The Mountain Lions then went on a run that stretched their lead to double digits.
Down 54-41 at the half, the Big Blue fought back to make it a one-point game, 87-86, with 1:29 remaining on a steal and dunk by
Khamaury McMillan.
A three-pointer by Concord's Ethan Heller stretched the lead back to four.
A free throw by
Landry Palata made it 90-87 with :53 remaining. Â
A next-possession lay-up by Da'Vion Moore became the final score with :44 remaining.
The Big Blue worked furiously, but missed their final four shots including two three-pointers.
This was a game that saw the team take steps in understanding and using
Coach Devin Hoehn's up-tempo system.
McMillan led the team with 20 points on 10-15 shooting. He added six rebounds and four steals in 26 minutes.
Marquez Cooper also led with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes. He also had two steals.
Ohashi led the team with five assists. He scored eight points in 33 minutes.
Overall, the team shot 36-81 for 44%. They were 5-18 for 28% from the three- point line.
The team was also 10 of 13 on free throws.
They were outrebounded 30-28.
