Baseball Captures Both Wins In Day One Against Virginia State

PETERSBURG, Virginia - Bluefield State stole the lead late and defeated Virginia State University 3-2 on Saturday, March 13 at Whaley Colbert Field.

The game was tied at two with The Big Blue batting in the top of the sixth when Roman Moore singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Austin Stambaugh struck out seven, while Virginia State pitchers sat down five.

In the first inning, the Big Blue got their offense started. Stambaugh earned the win for Bluefield State College. The southpaw lasted seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out seven.

Bluefield State collected seven hits. Noah Wooten and Cj Cooper all managed multiple hits for the Big Blue.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Trojans tied things up at two.

Nicholas Folk took the loss for the Trojans. The hurler lasted one and two-thirds innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out one and walking zero.

Jeremiah Hardy started the game for the Trojans. Hardy allowed seven hits and three runs over five and the third innings, striking out four

Hardy led the Trojans with two hits in three at-bats. Virginia State didn't commit a single error in the field. Kevin Russell had the most chances in the field with eight.

Game 2

Tanner Brandon wasted no opportunities at the plate, driving in eight on three hits to lead Bluefield State College past Virginia State University 15-2 in game two Saturday, March 13.

Brandon drove in runs on a grand slam in the second, a triple in the fifth, and a single in the sixth.

Bluefield State got things started in the first inning when Ty Sizemore singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring two runs.

The Big Blue scored five runs in the second inning. Brandon and Shane Reviello each drove in runs during the inning. The Big Blue socked one home run on the day. Brandon went yard in the second inning.

Daniel Rayfield earned the victory on the mound for Bluefield State. The right-hander lasted five innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out three and walking zero. Cornelius Thomas and Chase Adkins entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Andrew Riddick led things off on the mound for the Trojans. The pitcher allowed four hits and six runs over one inning, striking out one.

Emmett Jefferson went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Virginia State University in hits.

The season will continue tomorrow with another double-header against Virginia State University. The Big Blue will face the Trojans at noon at Whaley Colbert Field.
