Box Score 2 BLUEFIELD - The luck of the Irish wasn't with the Big Blue Wednesday as they dropped a doubleheader to the Glenville State Pioneers, 10-6 and 15-2, at Bowen Field. That snapped a four-game winning streak and dropped the Big Blue to 7-7 on the season.
In the first game, the Pioneers jumped on starter Kenrick Mendez for three runs in the first inning.
The Big Blue scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers responded with two more in the second.
They extended the lead to 8-1 in the fifth before the Big Blue responded with two in the bottom of the inning.
The Big Blue tried to make it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 10-3, they scored three quick runs on consecutive hits. They then loaded the bases with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate.
Adam Riggleman relieved for the Pioneers, retiring the last Big Blue and earning a save.
In Game 2, the Pioneers again jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Tanner Brandon. The Big Blue again scored a solo run in the bottom of the inning and added a second in the third.
Glenville State added three more in the third and fourth innings, extending their lead to 9-2.
They scored four in the sixth, highlighted by John Peloro's three-run homer off reliever Howie Spencer.
It was a long day for the Big Blue, made longer by a series of defensive lapses.
May their luck change again when they play Cincinnati-Clermont Saturday, the first day of Spring.
