Box Score 2 Bluefield State dropped a tough home doubleheader to Salem University Tuesday, 12-7 and 17-3.
In Game 1, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and added a run in the second.
BLUEFIELD - The Big Blue came back with two in the bottom of the fourth. They tied it in the fifth with two more after Salem scored one in the top of the inning. Kevin Moxey supplied the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly.
Unfortunately, the Tigers blew the game open with eight runs in the sixth.
Austin Stambaugh started for the Big Blue. He lasted five innings, allowing eight runs and striking out three. Jefferson Barmoy and Howie Spencer finished in relief.
The Big Blue offense showed some spark with RBIs from Taylor Tibbs (2), Shane Reviello (2) and Moxey. Trae Fowler went 3-for-3.
Game 2 got away from the Big Blue early and stayed that way.
Salem scored three runs in each of the first three innings, then added seven in the fourth for good measure. The game was called after five innings.
Freshman Nick Workman started for the Big Blue, losing his first game of the season. He lasted two innings giving up six runs.
Cam Hodge, Jonathan Oster and Daniel Rayfield finished out the pitching.
Trae Fowler continued his good day at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance.
Mauricio Hernandez pitched a complete game for the Tigers, giving up three runs on seven hits.
The Big Blue fell to 7-9 on the season.
