Wilberforce, OH – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to Central State 74-65 on Wednesday.
Essence Cowan led the Big Blue with 19 points followed by Londen Coleman with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Big Blue struck first after a three from Cowan to take the early lead. Central State battled back to take the 9-5 lead midway through the first half. The Big Blue closed out the first quarter with eight consecutive points to take the 18-17 lead into the second quarter.
Central State took back the lead early in the second quarter, but a layup from Coleman sparked a seven-point run to take the 28-22 lead for the Big Blue. Central State pulled within one with 45 seconds left, but two back-to-back layups from Alexus Tucker took the Big Blue into the half with the five-point advantage.
Central State evened the score at 45 with three minutes left in the third quarter followed by six points in a row to take the six-point lead. A layup from Coleman with 28 seconds remaining in the third pulled the Big Blue within two going into the final quarter.
Central State built their lead to seven midway through the fourth, but a three from Cowan and a fastbreak layup from Janutolo cut the lead to two. Central State pulled away in the final minute of play, building a lead of 10, coming away with the 74-65 victory over Bluefield State.
