BLUEFIELD – The Bluefield State men's basketball fell in a tough fought battle to the Concord University Monday evening in Ned E. Shott Gym, 89-88.
Big Blue will host Washington Adventist University. Feb. 16. Tipoff is set at 6:00 p.m.
The Mountain Lions went up early against the Big Blue. At the 14-minute mark, Da'vion Moore put up a jumper to give the Mountain Lions a 13-6 lead over the Big Blue.
The Big Blue struggled to cut down the Mountain Lions lead. The Mountain Lions held a lead as big as 13 points over the Big Blue at the 2-minute mark.
The Big Blue worked tirelessly to close the gap.
Marquez Cooper put up a jumper in the paint to cut the Mountain Lions lead to five going into the half, 46-41.
The Big Blue collected 12 points off of turnovers. The Mountain Lions saw 26 points off the bench.
The Big Blue outscored the Mountain Lions in the paint 32-28.
The second half would be an uphill battle for the Big Blue. The Big Blue came out scoring first, cutting the Mountain Lions lead down to three, 46-43.
The Mountain Lions quickly put seven up on the board to go back up by 10 over the Big Blue. The Big Blue continued to battle throughout the half.
With 2:33 left, a fast break dunk from
Khamaury McMillan gave the Big Blue the momentum they needed, 83-77.
With under a minute to go,
Hirotaka Ohashi got a steal. As result, McMillan tied it up with a layup in the paint and drew the foul. McMillan completed an old fashion three to give the Big Blue the lead with:59 remaining, 88-87.
The Mountain Lions went down and missed the layup. McMillan got the rebound but the Big Blue also couldn't produce on their end.
Landry Palata fouled sending Matt Weir to the line for two.
With:06 remaining, Weir made both giving the Mountain Lions the lead, 89-88. After a Big Blue timeout, the Big Blue got the ball but got down the stretch and couldn't complete the play.
The Big Blue had 30 points off of turnovers, 16 bench points, and 30 points in the paint in the second half.
Jordan Hinds led with 17 points on 5-14 shooting in 31 minutes.
Marquez Cooper followed with 16 points on 7-19 shooting in 26 minutes.
Khamaury McMillan also added 16 points on 7-12 shooting.
Kesean Robinson just missed a double-double. Robinson added eight points and seven rebounds.
Overall, the team shot 34-88 for 38.6%.
They were 1-16 for 6.3% from the three-point line.
The team was also 19 of 24 on free throws.
The Mountain Lions outrebounded the Big Blue 62-30.
