Women's Basketball Drops a Tough One on The Road to Emory and Henry

MEADOWVIEW, West Virginia — The Bluefield State women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought battle to Emory and Henry Thursday night in Meadowview, West Virginia, 58-52.   

Londen Coleman led the Big Blue with 17 points on 7-10 shooting. Coleman added five rebounds in 26 minutes. 

Azariah Binford added 13 points on 4-10 shooting. Binford added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 40 minutes. 

Gabrielle Thomas added nine rebounds in 33 minutes. 

Overall, the team shot 20-56 for 35.7%.

They were 6-28 for 21.4% from the three-point line.

And 6-11 for 54.5% from the free-throw line.

The Big Blue got off to a slow start. The Wasps had a 6-0 lead over the Big Blue at the 8-minute mark. Londen Coleman gave the Big Blue their first two of the game with a jumper inside the paint. 

The Big Blue got within three at the 2-minute mark after a goo three-pointer by Alexus Tucker, 13-10. The Wasps quickly went back up by seven after the Big Blue were scoreless for about a minute and a half. Katrine Davis ended the first quarter with a good layup inside the paint. The Wasps led 17-12. 

The Wasps continued to add to their lead at the beginning of the second quarter. The Big Blue struggled to find a lead in the second quarter but kept the Wasps under a 10 point lead. At halftime, the Big Blue trailed the Wasps by seven, 31-24. 

The Big Blue came out into the third quarter dominating the floor. Thomas drained a three to put the Big Blue within four. Coleman added two more at the 7-minute mark to put the Big Blue within two. 

The Big Blue defense left the Wasps scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Wasps added to their lead with a three from Amaya Lee, 34-29. 

The Big Blue fought to cut the Wasps lead to two at the end of the third quarter with a pull-up jumper by Alexus Tucker

The Wasps added six to their lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter before the Big Bue could score. Coleman drew the foul and went to the line to shoot two. Coleman made 1/2, the Big Blue still trailed by seven at the 7-minute mark. 

The Big Blue battled to the end, Coleman cut the Wasps lead to three with a good layup in the paint with:37 left, 55-52. The Big Blue continued to foul, sending the Wasps to the line. 

The Wasps scored the last three points of the game at the free-throw line.
