BLUEFIELD - The Bluefield State softball team will open up their season Wednesday, February 9 at UVA-Wise at Cavalier Field. The Big Blue returns six starting players and adds twelve new incoming as they look to have a fresh start and a strong record.
As the Big Blue prepare for a 50 game long season. Bluefield State's first doubleheader will be:
- Wednesday, Feb. 9 – 1:00 p.m. EST
- Wednesday, Feb. 9 – 3:00 p.m. EST
Rocky Stinson is entering his second season as head coach of the Bluefield State softball team. "The 2022 squad has the opportunity to show the success on the scoreboard and overall growth of the program," said head coach Stinson.
He believes this team has the potential to build a foundation for the next several classes. "the key new faces that will see substantial time for the Big Blue are:
Head coach Rocky Stinson added several new key players to his roster in the recruiting season.
Maurincia Demmings (Fr. Catcher) from OH, Kylie Salazar (Fr. RHP) from TX, and Kennedy Warbritton (Fr. CF) from FL.
Calla Cooksey (So. transfer) will help anchor the defense at shortstop.
Key returners are Madison Thompson (Jr. RHP) along, and Hannah Fisher (Jr. RF), both from VA.
Freshman, Maurincia Demmings says, "she's most excited for the team to grow together and support each other's success."
Calla Cooksey, sophomore transfer adds, "I definitely think we will build this program to the next level!"
After going 0-20 last season the team looks to turn things around this year. The team has been working hard and is determined to have a winning record as well as earn a place in USCAA Softball World Series.
