BLUEFIELD -- The Bluefield State softball team dropped their home opener to The University of Virginia's College at Wise in a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Graham Rec. Field.
Game 1:
The Cavaliers started things off in the top of the first with Sarah Barret hitting a single up the middle for a two RBI.Â
The Big Blue struck in the third inning when
Maurincia Demmings singled down the left-field line and an RBI.
Emma Crawford scored the first run for the Big Blue this season.Â
The Cavaliers added three more in the fourth. Hayley Ducket reached first base on a fielding error and an RBI for Barret. Jenna McDermit hit one out of the park for two RBI.Â
Madison Thompson (0-4) took the loss for Bluefield State. She gave up eight runs  -- on ten hits in 7.0 inning of work.Â
Kaylee Jones added one in the fifth with a triple up the middle an RBI for McKenna Falwell. Barret cracked one out the park two give the Cavaliers their final two of the game.Â
Game 2:Â
The Big Blue closed out Friday with a 19-3 loss in game 2 of the doubleheader.
The Cavaliers struck first again with bases loaded and a walk for Alexis Miles bringing in Kaylee Jones. The Big Blue defense stepped up to get freshman
Kylie Salazar out of the first inning.Â
Emma Crawford hit her first home run of the season for a two-RBI giving the Big Blue their first lead of the season, 2-1.Â
The Big Blue got down in the second as the Cavalier hung five. The Cavaliers continued adding to their lead in the third and fourth.Â
The Big Blue never gave up,
Kylie Nelson grounded to second base bringing in
La'Naeyah Ayers giving the Big Blue their final score of the game.Â
Bluefield State dropped to 0-7, Â with the losses the Cavaliers improved to 9-3.Â

The Big Blue will travel to Ettrick, Virginia to face the Virginia State University in a doubleheader. Saturday, Mar. 5. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.Â
