In a light competition day for the women's field events, Beyonka Lee took second in the weight throw and fourth in the shot put, while teammate Oliviah Green finished sixth in the weight.
For B-State's men, big performances in the field events paved the way for the success, as McKinley Pennix took third place (second among collegians) in the men's long jump, Darius Brown finished third in the men's triple jump and eight in the long jump. Myles Rice and Dominic Escamilla took a pair of fifth-place finishes amongst loaded fields in the shot put and weight throw, respectively. Ethan Spangler (sixth), Sherman Franklin (seventh) and Thomas Smith (eighth) also placed in the weight throw.
On the track, Joey Isaacs placed in both the 55m dash (sixth) and 200m dash (fourth) and Jalen Jones took sixth in the 400m dash. Austin Sigman finished fifth in the 800m run and the men's 4X400 meter relay team finished second after a tight race with Belmont Abbey.
Isaacs and Blue (55m dash), Tyler Davis (3,000m run), Flynn (5,000 meters), Kegler (55m hurdles), Pennix (Long Jump), and Lee (shot put and weight throw) all set new indoor school records for the Big Blue.
"This was a stripped-down meet for us in terms of event distribution," said Bluefield State Head Coach Brooks Rexroat. "We let athletes focus on a single event or maybe two rather than the fuller complement some of our athletes often take on. We wanted to look at individual performances over the team scoreboard, and really get some data to fine-tune training as we push toward the end of the season, but we would up looking strong in both facets anyway. We got a lot of good work in, got some good film to evaluate and grow from, and some more valuable high-intensity experience on the track, runways, and throwing circles for our young team. Now we go back to the practice lab for a few weeks and we'll see what progress the next competition brings."
The Big Blue are next scheduled to compete Feb. 9 at the JDL College Team Challenge in Winston-Salem, NC.
