Big Blue Drop Road Game Against Virginia State

Petersburg, VA – Bluefield State University football fell to Virginia State 39-23 at Rogers Stadium on Saturday.

After the Big Blue were forced to punt on their first drive of the afternoon, the Trojans scored to take the 6-0 lead early. The Trojans extended their lead 12-0 midway through the quarter, but the Big Blue offense answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Isiah Teal to Cam Taylor. With Braxton VanScoy's extra point good, the Big Blue put seven on the board.

In the second quarter, both teams struggled to get on the board, but the Trojans scored with 38 seconds to go in the half to take the 19-7 lead over the Big Blue into halftime.

The Big Blue added two after a safety on the Trojans second drive of the half. The Trojans answered with another touchdown to take their lead 26-9. After the Big Blue were forced to punt on their next drive, tackles by Reggie Troutman. Jaylyn Norris and Tamaryon Ravenel for the Big Blue defense forced the Trojans to punt. Lucas Moore blocked the punt and Reggie Redman recovered it for a Big Blue touchdown.

The Trojans opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown, but a block by TJ Mullix would stop the extra point attempt. The Trojans would extend their lead 39-15 with 3:49 on the clock, but a determined Big Blue offense would add another after Teal found Khyon Smith in the endzone for a 3-yard pass. Teal would find K. Smith again for the successful two-point conversion. The Big Blue stop the Trojans on the last play of the game with tackles from TJ Gunter, James McGlaun II (2), DJ Jackson and Jo'el Hutchison.

Isiah Teal completed 11 of 26 attempts for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Jahdir Loftland led in rushing for the Big Blue with 80 yards and Khyon Smith in receiving with 68 yards.

TJ Gunter led all players with 11 total tackles (6 solo, 5 assists). James McGlaun II added 9 (4 solo, 5 assists) followed by Reggie Troutman with 8 (7 solo, 1 assist).

The Big Blue will be back at home next Saturday, October 21st against Bowie State University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
