Athens, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell in overtime to Concord University, 74-73, on Wednesday.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Big Blue answered with 14 consecutive points to take the 14-4 lead. The Mountain Lions added three, but the Big Blue closed out the first quarter with a three from Zaynah Robinson and a free throw for Jayla Sample to take the 18-7 lead into the second quarter.
The Big Blue opened the second with back-to-back jumpers from Drea Betts and Azariah Binford to extend the lead 22-7. The Big Blue extended their lead to 18 midway through the quarter. The Mountain Lions cut the Big Blue lead down to six going into the half.
A three by the Mountain Lions with 6:23 to go in the third cut the Big Blue lead to two. The Big Blue stretched their lead to seven after a trip to the line for Shalance Montoya. The Big Blue would take the 46-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Big Blue were up by ten. The Mountain Lions took the two-point lead with 11 seconds left in regulation. With one second on the clock, a layup from Sincere Roberts evened the score and forced overtime.
Roberts scored two after a trip to the line, but the Mountain Lions evened the score at 65, followed by a free throw to take the 66-65 lead. With 1:21 remaining, a layup from Montoya put the Big Blue up by one. The Mountain Lions took back the lead with 41 seconds to go and held that lead to take the 74-73 victory over the Big Blue.
Shalance Montoya led all players with 20 points on the night followed by Jayla Sample with 12 and Azariah Binford with 11. Alexyss Newman led the Big Blue with nine rebounds.
