Frostburg, MD – Bluefield State University Women's Wrestling program split a pair of close duals at host Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon.
In the first dual, the Big Blue lost a close match to York College of Pennsylvania, falling by two team points 25-23, after forfeiting the heavyweight bout. Raelie Hernandez rallied from an early deficit to win a hard-fought decision at 123 lbs. Caitlyn Ash followed that win up with her second pin of the year, running a half-nelson in the par Terre position to secure the fall. Tayla Grove earned her third win of the year at 155 lbs., which set up Hannah Catungal's move to 170 lbs. in the final bout of the dual. Typically wrestling at 155 lbs., Catungal bumped up and used a variety of throws and trips to run out to a 14-7 lead before scoring the match-ending pin.
In the second match of the day, Bstate won their second dual of the year 20-19 over Frostburg. Gracelyn Hanson scored a technical fall at 116 lbs., Caitlyn Ash and Malia Cook earned injury default victories in back-to-back matches, while Hannah Catungal earned the dual deciding points at 155 lbs. via forfeit.
"We wrestled really well in the first match," said Sam Gardner. "The forfeits are hurting us in the team score, but many teams have this problem because the sport is still in its infancy. In the matches we wrestled, we showed improvement. Our defense is improving, we are wrestling hard, and we are scoring points. I was happy to see we were able to rally and come from behind in a number of matches today. That's something we struggled with earlier. Hannah is now 8-1 on the season. Caitlyn has moved to 4-2. Raelie and Gracelyn had nice performances today. We are moving in the right direction."
