Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball used a strong first quarter to take down Saint Augustine's University 66-57. The Big Blue improve to 8-1 (CIAA 2-0) and the Falcons pick up their second loss of the season, 6-2 (0-1 CIAA).
The Falcons struck first with a three, but the Big Blue answered with six to take the 6-3 lead. The Falcons followed with back-to-back layups to take the one-point lead. The Big Blue closed out the first quarter with 16 unanswered points to go into the second with the 22-7 advantage. The Falcons open the second quarter with the first seven to pull within eight of the Big Blue. A layup by Shalance Montoya to take Big Blue into the half with the 38-23 lead.
Three layups from Alexyss Newman, Azariah Binford and Sincere Roberts and a three by Katrina Davis built the Big Blue lead to 24 coming out of the half. The Falcons would cut the Big Blue lead to 20 going into the fourth quarter. The Falcons would attempt to battle back in the fourth, but the Big Blue would hold on for the 66-57 victory.
Alexyss Newman led all scorers with 24 points. Katrina Davis came away with 13 points and six rebounds with Sincere Roberts adding six points and seven rebounds.
