Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University men's basketball took down Catawba College 93-87 at Ned Shott Gymnasium on Monday.
Malik Tidwell led the Big Blue with 21 points followed by Kaine McColley with 19, Jordan Hinds with 17, Chase Page with 13 and Rylan Bowens with 12. The Big Blue controlled the rebounding 40-38 with Hinds, Bowens and Malik Lacewell coming away with six apiece. Hirotaka Ohashi added seven assists on the night.
The Indians scored the first three points on the night, but a three from McColley evened the score. After a trip to the line for Bowens tied it at seven, the Indians scored nine consecutive to take the lead. Midway through the first, a jumper from the Indians put them ahead by 12. Back-to-back threes from Page and one from McColley pulled the Big Blue within three of the Indians. Going into the final minute of the first half, the Big Blue cut down an eight-point deficit to one to go into the half down 45-44.
After trading back-and-forth buckets to open the second, a midrange jumper from Hinds put the Big Blue up by five. A three-point play by the Indians sparked a 15-2 run to take the ten-point lead over the Big Blue. At the 3:25 mark, Big Blue McColley evened the score at 79 with two free throws. The Indians answered with two, but Tidwell took back the lead with a three. With less than two-minute left in play, the Big Blue evened the score at 83. The Big Blue would go on to outscore the Indians 10-4 to take the 93-87 victory over Catawba College.
