Big Blue Fall to Winston-Salem State

Winston-Salem, NC – The Big Blue moved to 1-3 (0-2 in conference play) after falling to Winston-Salem State University 30-0 on Saturday.

After the Big Blue won the coin toss and deferred to the Rams, the Rams got on the board in their opening drive to take the early lead. Following a punt by the Big Blue offense, the Big Blue defense stepped up with tackles by Eric Tunstall, Jaylyn Norris (3), Jarves Scruggs (2), and Brett Brantley, forcing the Rams to turn the ball over on downs and giving the Big Blue possession at their own 12-yard line. However, the Big Blue drove down the field, but a fumble allowed the Rams to extend their lead to 13-0.

At the 14:35 mark, Jai'que Hart connected with Darius Thompson for an 11-yard pass, and Jahdir Loftland rushed for 13 yards to move into Ram territory. After a timeout called by the Rams, they managed to force a Big Blue fumble and gain possession. Nevertheless, the Big Blue defense stayed strong, forcing the Rams to punt. After two incomplete passes, Hart found Cam Taylor for a 26-yard pass to secure the first down. The Big Blue moved the chains two more times during the drive but were ultimately forced to punt. Later in the second quarter, the Rams added to their lead, heading into the second half with a 20-0 advantage.

After the Big Blue were forced to punt on their opening drive of the second half, the Big Blue defense kept the Rams from getting a first down, putting the ball back in Big Blue hands. Hart connected with Perry Wilder III for seven yards and then rushed for ten to get the first down.  A penalty by the Big Blue stalled the drive, and they were forced to punt. Later in the quarter, a pick-six added seven more points for the Rams.

The Big Blue defense held the Rams to only a field goal in the fourth quarter in the final minute of play.

The Big Blue were led on defense by Brett Brantley with nine tackles (6 assists, 3 solo), and Jarves Scruggs with eight (4 solo, 4 assists).
