Wilberforce, OH – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to Central State 62-56. The Big Blue pick up their first loss of the season and move to 2-1 on the year.
The Marauders jumped out to an early lead scoring back-to-back jumper to begin play. Midway through the half, the Marauders extended their lead to seven. With 1:14 left in the first quarter, a three from Tianna Rhodes and later a free throw pulled the Big Blue within three going into the second.
The Marauders built their lead to eight with five minutes left in the half. A jumper from Caiyiah Smith cut the lead to three, but a bucket at the buzzer for the Marauders pushed their lead to five, 27-22, going into the half.
The Big Blue quickly went to work in the third quarter with a fast break jumper and three from Rhodes to even the score at 27. The Marauders took back the lead 37-29, but the Big Blue scored 10 consecutive points to take the 39-37 lead. With less then a minute left and the score tied at 40, the Marauders took the two-point lead. A trip to the line for Big Blue Aniyah Quow evened the score at 42 going into the fourth quarter.
The Big Blue held the lead until 3:43 left in regulation (49-49). A free-throw with 21 seconds left by Azariah Binford gave the Big Blue the 53-51 lead, but two free throws by the Marauders forced overtime.
The Big Blue took the lead early in overtime 55-53, but the Marauders would go on to score 7 unanswered points to take the 60-55 lead. A free throw from Andrew Robertson broke up the Marauder offense, 56-60. The Marauder's would score two more points to secure the 62-56 over the Big Blue.
Rhodes led all players with 21 points with Caiyiah Smith adding 11.
