Richmond, VA – Bluefield State University women's basketball took down Virginia Union University 67-64 in overtime on Saturday. The Big Blue improved to 11-10 (5-7 CIAA) with the Panthers moving to 16-8 (9-5 CIAA) on the year.
After a layup by Shalance Montaoya gave the Big Blue the one-point lead, the Big Blue scored 12 consecutive points to extend their lead 17-6. The Panthers answered with eight points to cut the Big Blue lead to three going into the second quarter. The Big Blue outscored the Panthers 23-17 in the second quarter to take the 16-point lead into the half.
The Panthers scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to pull within five of the Big Blue. After a layup by Jayla Sample extended the Big Blue lead to seven, the Panthers scored the last six points of quarter to cut the Big Blue lead to one. After six lead changes in the fourth, a trip to the line by Katrina Davis put them Big Blue up by three going into the final 22 seconds. The Panthers hit a three with two seconds on the clock to force overtime.
The Panthers scored two back-to-back buckets to take the four-point lead, but the Big Blue answered with seven consecutive points to take the 65-62 lead. The Panthers pulled within one with 18 seconds left to go, but two free throws from Azariah Binford sealed the 67-64 victory.
Alexyss Newman led all scorers with 21 points followed by Sample with 14 and Binford with ten. Montoya led all players with 18 rebounds on the night.
