Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University women's basketball fell to Virginia Union University 62-51. The Big Blue move to 9-14 (2-10 CIAA) with the Panthers improving to 16-4 (9-1 CIAA).
The Panthers scored the first nine points of the matchup, but the Big Blue chipped away pulling within two after a bucket from Jasmine Jenkins. A trip to the line for Big Blue Tianna Rhodes evened the score at 14. The Big Blue took the two-point lead after a putback layup from Jenkins. A three-point play gave the Panthers the 19-18 lead going into the second quarter. The Panthers built a lead seven-point lead, but the Big Blue scored five consecutive to cut the lead to two. The Panthers extended their lead to four going into the half.
The Panthers pushed their lead to 11 at the 5:48 mark, but the Big Blue closed out the half on an 8-3 run to cut the lead 46-40. A Jayla Sample three at the 8:11 mark to pull within three of the Panthers. Late free throws for the Panthers sealed the 62-51 victory over the Big Blue.
Tianna Rhodes led the Big Blue in scoring with 12 points with Jenkins coming away with the double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
