Athens, WV – Bluefield State University baseball split a high-scoring double header against Concord, falling 12-11 in game one and bouncing back to take game two 8-6. The Big Blue move to 1-2 on the year.
Game One – 12-11 L
The opening game showcased the Big Blue nearly completing a massive comeback in the final inning. Trailing 12-3 entering the seventh, the Big Blue exploded for eight runs to pull within one. The rally was highlighted by a grand slam from Kevin Rodriguez; however, the Mountain Lions recorded the final out to take the 12-11 win over the Big Blue.
Rodriguez finished the game with four RBIs, while Curtis Ball went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Andy Williams collected the loss on the mound, throwing 2.1 innings, giving up six hits, three earned runs, and one walk.
Game Two – 8-6 W
The Big Blue maintained their offensive momentum into game two, securing the 8-6 victory to earn the split. Going into the third down by two, a three-run homerun for Angel Martinez put the Big Blue on top 3-2.
The Big Blue extended their lead by adding two in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh, 8-2. The Mountain Lions attempted to rally late in the seventh by adding four, but the Big Blue secured the 8-6 victory over Concord.
Jack Sams earned the win on the mound, throwing 6.1 innings, giving up four hits, four runs, five walks, and striking out three.
