Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University baseball took down crosstown rival Bluefield University 8-1 on 14-hits. The Big Blue move to 5-8 on the year.
The Big Blue took the quick lead, plating two runs in the top of the first. After adding another run in the fourth, the Big Blue extended the advantage to 5-0 in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homerun by Kevin Rodriguez. The Rams got on the board in the sixth, 5-1.
The Big Blue put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth, plating three runs to seal the 8-1 victory. Edwin Hernandez ignited the rally with a leadoff single and scored on an RBI double to left center by Nick Diaz. After Blake Mckinney walked and Angel Martinez singled to load the bases, Anderson Moreno drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Diaz. Nate Rollins capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly, allowing Mckinney to cross the plate.
Angel Martinez, Edwin Hernandez and Nick Diaz each finished going 3-for-5. Kevin Rodriguez collected three RBIs with Diaz adding two.
William Grubb earned the complete-game win allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out three and walking only one batter.
