Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University softball swept a home doubleheader against Salem University on Wednesday. The Big Blue earned the 11-6 victory in the opener before taking game two 4-1.
Game One – 11-6 W
The Big Blue offense erupted for 11 hits to take the 11-6 win in game one. The Big Blue jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after Alexis Coles delivered a clutch two-RBI single to score Paige Whittington and Skyy Hicks. After the Tigers briefly tied it up 3-3, the Big Blue took control with a massive six-run third inning. A double from Sydney Leadbetter and a two-RBI double from Kyla Jones fueled the rally with Skyy Hicks capped the inning with a sacrifice fly that plated two additional runs, pushing the lead to 9-3.
The Tigers pulled within three runs in the fourth, but the Big Blue added two insurance runs in the fifth behind an RBI double from Hicks.
Yonah Rogers earned the complete game win, allowing eight hits, six runs, two walks while striking out five.
Game Two – 4-1
The Big Blue took an early 1-0 lead in the first without recording a hit, as Whittington walk, stole third, and crossed the plate on a throwing error. Going into the fifth tied 1-1, the Big Blue took back the lead with Whittington scoring on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single from Leadbetter, 3-1. In the sixth, Desiree Brown provided the final run with an RBI double.
Jackie Sandy earned the win in the circle, allowing four hits, one run, two walks while striking out three. Taylor Fells picked up the save, allowing two hits, one walk while striking out one.
