Bluefield, VA – Bluefield State University softball swept Virginia Union 10-6 and 13-4 on senior day. The Big Blue improve to 19-22 on the year.
Game one: 10-6 W
The Big Blue set the tone in the opening frame, plating two runs after Julianna Costanzo sparked the rally with a double. Sydney Leadbetter and Janessah Nappi followed with back-to-back RBIs. Leadbetter added to the lead in the third, driving in Skyy Hicks to make it 3-0.
Virginia Union took the lead in the fifth with a four-run inning, but the Big Blue answered in the bottom of the inning with a massive six-run inning. The rally included an RBI single from Nappi and a two-RBI double from Jackie Sandy. Kyla jones and Alexis Coles added RBI hits during the rally to put the Big Blue back on top 9-4. Paige Whittington added a final run in the sixth, scoring on a groundout after leading off with her second double of the game.
Yonah Rogers earned the win in the circle, throwing five innings allowing five hits, four runs, two walks while striking out two. Taylor Fells threw two innings in relief allowing three hits, two runs, three walks while striking out four.
Game two: 13-4 W
The Big Blue scored seven runs in the first inning, featuring a two-RBI single from Costanzo, an RBI double from Jones, and an RBI single from Mikaylah Chimara. The Big Blue added three more runs in the second, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Nappi to extend the lead to 10-0.
After the Panthers narrowed the gap, adding four in the third, Leadbetter scored Whittington with an RBI single. Julianna Costanzo sealed the run-rule victory with a two-run home run to left field,13-4.
Yonah Rogers earned the second win of the day in relief, throwing 2.1 innings allowing one hit and three strikeouts.
