Bluefield, WV- The Bluefield State Big Blue are ready to open the 2026 football season Thursday night as they travel to take on the Tusculum Pioneers. The matchup gives the Big Blue an opportunity to start the new season on a strong note after finishing 2025 with a 3-7 overall record and a 2-5 record in CIAA play. Tusculum finished last season 1-9 overall and 0-9 in South Atlantic Conference play. However, the Pioneers dominated the Big Blue in last season's opener, defeating Bluefield State 49-23. This year, Bluefield State enters the matchup with a different mindset and several returning playmakers who could make a major difference.
Brandon Wiley returns after an outstanding 2025 season for the Big Blue, recording 41 receptions for 750 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 18.29 yards per catch. Wiley also was named to the 2026 Deacon Jones Player of the Year Watch List and was selected to the 2026 CIAA Preseason Team.
All-CIAA Second Team wide receiver Julian Crawley returns for the Big Blue after a breakout campaign in 2025. Crawley recorded 655 receiving yard and 10 touchdowns while averaging an impressive 23.29 yards per reception.
The Pioneers will be looking to build off last season's matchup while Bluefield State will be looking for revenge. The Pioneers are led by head coach Billy Taylor, entering his third season at Tusculum. Among the key players to watch are junior quarterback Teddy Gleaton, senior running back Cam Ferguson, offensive lineman Gabe McLamb, defensive lineman Malachi Jim-Lawson, linebacker Jimi Olarinde and linebacker Cam Garnett.
With both teams looking to start the 2026 season with momentum, Thursday night's matchup should come down to which team can control the line of scrimmage, protect the football and make the biggest plays when opportunities come.
