Savanna Hammond

Savanna Hammond is entering her third season as Head Coach for the Women's Volleyball team at Bluefield State University. Since her reign began in 2021, Hammond has been able to turn women’s volleyball at Bluefield State into a sought-after program. In her first season as head coach, the Big Blue made it to the championship match of the USCAA where they ultimately lost. After not winning a set for three years, the Big Blue had proven they were hungry for a title. In 2022, the Big Blue vamped of their strength of schedule to finish 16-16 while bringing home the USCAA National Championship title.  

This coming season will be Hammond’s first season leading her team in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA).  

Notables: 

  • Has made a tournament run both of her seasons at Bluefield State.  
  • Steered Big Blue to their first ever Championship title in 2022.  
  • Her first season, her team obtained the first set (not match) win in over three years.  
  • Won USCAA coach of the year in 2021.  
  • Won Bluefield State’s Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2022.  
  • Holds a high standard for her student-athletes in the classroom and has season a consistent incline in student-athlete GPAs since taking over the program.   Prior to Bluefield State University: She brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the program through her history as a coach and a player. Hammond was a walk-on at Radford University where she earned a full scholarship for her last three seasons. During her time at Radford, her team earned two Big South regular season titles, one Big South Tournament championship, and one NCAA Tournament berth in 2013 where they were defeated by Minnesota. Hammond is also an Associate Club Director for River Valley Juniors Volleyball club out of the New River Valley where she has coached at the nationals level for the last seven club seasons and has recently taken over the role as Director of Recruiting.   Hammond is from Pearisburg, VA and attended Narrows High School, playing volleyball, basketball, and track. Hammond was a two-time volleyball Player of the Year, All Timesland Female Player of the Year (2011-2012), and accumulated several district, region, and state honors. She was also a two-time State Champion in track and field for long (2010) and triple jump (2012). After college, Hammond assisted head coach Erica Gautier with the varsity volleyball program at Narrows High School for two seasons when they placed runner-up in the Virginia A State Championship.   Education: Master’s of Criminal Justice, 2017 – Radford University. 

Personal: Hammond has one daughter (Rori) with her husband Kyle.
