Battle of Bluefield Goes to Bluefield College

Box Score

Bluefield, VA- The Battle of Bluefield went the way of the Bluefield College Rams this year but was no short of drama. Bluefield College came out on top this year with a 4-3 victory.

The game started out as a pitcher's duel early with both starts pitching 3 scoreless innings. On the mound for the Big Blues was Jacob Muncy, who ended his game giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and striking out 6. Muncy was pitching very well until the 7th inning when he gave up a wild pitch and then Crachad Laing had a passed ball on back to back pitches which scored 2 of the 3 runs in the inning, putting the Rams up 4-2. But this is when the real drama started.

Bluefield State's first 2 runs came in the 6th inning, when Justin Bowler tripled scoring Sean Williams. One batter later, Payton Durham doubled and Bowler walked in. But as mentioned before, the real drama came after the 7th inning with the Rams leading 4-2. In the 8th, Bluefield State threatened when Boston New came on as a pinch hitter and singled to center. But in a weird play where Cody Underwood tried to bunt it but it looked foul, New was thrown out at 2nd.

In the bottom of the 9th things got real tense. Bluefield College brought in their number 1 starter to finish out the game. But Chase Chambers, fighting off a bum knee, was able to get to him, getting a triple. Bubba Smith pinch ran for him and scored on a Sac Fly by Sam Harris. Chaz Rutherford came to the plate and hit the ball to the shortstop which looked to be out number 3, but the shortstop threw the ball in the dirt and Rutherford was able to reach. Then Laing, who struck out 3 previous times, hit a base hit over the first baseman's head, and Rutherford ended up on 3rd after a bad throw by the 2nd baseman to try and get Laing out. With runners at the corners, New had a chance to tie the game, but could not get a good read on the Bluefield College pitcher and struck out to end the game 4-3.

The Big Blues will look to take this effort to Mars Hill this weekend for a 3 game series. Check back on our website of links to live stats or video and updates on the scores of these games.
