BSC Splits Season Series with SAU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

Princeton, WV- The Big Blues played their final 4 games of an 8 game season series against St. Augustine's over the weekend. The results were much like the 1st 4 games of the series with each team taking 2 games and the season series ending 4-4. Games 1 & 2 were played in Mt. Airy, NC and ended 10-1 and 4-3; with Bluefield State winning game 2. Games 3 and 4, which were played in Princeton, WV ended 10-18 and 7-3 with Bluefield State taking the 4th game of the series.

In game 1 the bats were alive for the Falcons as they scored 10 runs on 15 hits against the combination of Tanner Muovich and Romeo Cartwright. The long ball was of plenty for SAU as they had 4 for the game, all coming in the 1st 5 innings. The lone run for Bluefield State came in the 2nd inning when Cole Blocker hit into a fielder's choice. The Falcons were trying to turn a double play and the shortstop over threw 1B trying to make the play which ended up scoring Justin Bowler.

Addison Meeks took the bump in game 2 and picked up his 4th win of the season. Meeks had an impressive complete game, giving up only 3 runs on 7 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Runs for both teams came in the 3rd inning. After the Falcons scored 3 in the top half the Big Blues answered with 3 of their own off a bases clearing double by Sam Harris, scoring Drew D'Angelo, Billy O'Hara & Chaz Rutherford. Bluefield State's winning run came in the bottom of the 5th inning when Justin Bowler singled, driving in D'Angelo for the 2nd time of the game.

Game 3 in Princeton was another offensive explosion, which saw 28 runs scored between the 2 teams. The Big Blues were in a massive hole early, down 15-2 at one point in the game. But give some credit to BSC, they battled back scoring 8 runs in the final 3 innings to end the game 18-10. Sam Harris and Justin Bowler each had a 3 hit, 2 RBI afternoon. Bubba Smith had 2 hits and 3 RBIs.

Game 4 saw an outstanding pitching performance by Brandon Chandler. Chandler went a complete game giving up 3 runs on 9 hits. Chandler also had a career high 7 strike outs to just 2 walks in the game. He did get some help defensively as the Big Blues were able to turn a double play to get out of a jam in the 6th inning. Billy O'Hara and Bubba Smith had impressive offensive games. O'Hara went 2-3 with an RBI and Bubba Smith went 1-4 with 2 RBI's and scored twice himself.

Bluefield State now takes on Bluefield College for the 2nd time this season at Bowen Field. The Big Blues lost the early season match up 13-4 but will look to even the series at 2:00 pm Tuesday.
