Winston-Salem, NC – Bluefield State University Track & Field opened the season in one of the best openings in program history with nine school records broken and four new names added to the school record book at the JDL Fast Track.
Freshman Ja'Myiah Walker started off the record-breaking meet, placing 5th overall with a mark of 12.73m in the women's Shot Put to set the new school indoor record. Freshman Jai'Den Smith, who ran an 8.57s in the men's 60m Hurdles, is currently ranked 6th overall in the CIAA. Robert Scott continues his explosive career with a school record time in the 60m Dash of 6.92s and reset his own record in the 200m (21.59s), sitting at the top of the conference leaderboard.
"Nothing but hard work in the cold mountains of WV," said head coach Wesley Arthur. "And the athletes came to show out"
Senior Shyheim Holmes continued the trend of setting records and a personal lifetime best in the men's 400m with a time of 50.49s. Abrielle King set the new school record in her freshman campaign in the 400m with a time of 1:02.89. Nellie Ambriton took the school record in the men's 800 at 1:59.77 followed by Sekou Coulibaly (2:00.19).
In the final individual event of the day, Senior Captain Darius Brown hit the national Provisional Qualifier (14.55m) in his sixth and final jump and is now #1 in the CIAA in the triple jump.
The men's 4x400 closed out the day, with Jamon Simes, Sekou Coulibaly, Nellie Ambriton, and Samaritan Page setting the indoor school record at 3:24.34.
The Big Blue will be back in action January 17th in New York City at the HBCU Showcase.
