Big Blue Baseball Falls In Opening Doubleheader

BLUEFIELD - Bluefield State dropped their first game of the season to Shorter University Saturday, February 20 at Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex, 3-6.

The Big Blue watched the game slip away early. Shorter University scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Woods and an error in the second inning.

Howie Spencer didn't have the best day on the mound. The right-hand pitcher allowed four hits and five runs over four and two-thirds innings.

The Big Blue tallied one home run on the day. Tanner Brandon put one out in the sixth inning.

JR McRee, Brandon, and Ty Sizemore each collected one hit to lead Bluefield State.

Shorter University didn't commit a single error in the field.

The Hawks pulled away for good with two runs in the second inning. In the second inning, Woods's sacrifice fly scored one run for Shorter University and an error scored another run.

Pintaro earned the victory on the mound for the Hawks. The bulldogs went six innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out 15. Number 29 threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Game two didn't swing in Bluefield State's way either. The Big Blue couldn't recover in a 25-3 loss to Shorter University. The Hawks scored on a double by Gerstner in the first inning, a single by Beitterworth in the first inning, a groundout by Acevedo in the first inning, and a double by Gerstner in the second inning.

The Big Blue struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively with five errors.

Shorter University got things moving in the first inning, when Gerstner doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

Austin Stambaugh pitched for the Big Blue in game two. The pitcher surrendered eight runs on eight hits over second and third innings, striking out one.

Bluefield State tallied two home runs on the day. Kevon Moxey had a dinger to right field in the sixth inning. Noah Wooten went for the long ball in the fourth inning.

Wooten led the Big Blue with two hits in two at-bats.

The Hawks scored 11 runs in the third inning. The offensive onslaught by Shorter University was led by Acevedo, Christian, Pajer, Gerstner, Frayer, and Acevedo, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Ryan Parker was the winning pitcher for the Hawks. The hurler allowed four hits and one run over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking zero.

Shorter University saw the ball well today, racking up 19 hits in the game.

The Big Blue will be back in action tomorrow against Shorter in day two at 3 p.m.
