Bluefield, W.Va.— The Bluefield State Volleyball team defeated the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots (8-15) in three straight sets, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-20 tonight in the Ned E. Shott Gymnasium. The victory gives the Lady Blues their 11th straight win and their overall record to 15-4 on the season.

In the first set, Jessie Rehwald had a small rally while on serve to help the Lady Blues take a 15-12 lead and forced the Fighting Scots to call a timeout. After a short rally, the Lady Blues took a 22-18 lead to force another timeout by the Fighting Scots. After a block assist by Sashane Watson and Tanasia Blake, a kill by Brittany Bonamy and a solo block by Sashane Watson; the Lady Blues won the set 25-18.
In the second set, the Fighting Scots came out and took a 5-1 lead, causing Coach Poitier to call a timeout. The Lady Blues did rally back, but were still down 6-11. The very next play, the Lady Blues won a very long rally after a kill by Tyann Thomas. The Lady Blues rallied back to get within 3 points, 13-16, but the Fighting Scots came right back to score 3 points in a row to take a 20-13 lead. Coach Poitier called another timeout to re-group.
The Lady Blues were down 13-20 and scored 4 straight points to make it 17-20. The Lady Blues fought back to tie the game 23-23. They were down, 23-24 after a kill by the Fighting Scots, but the Lady Blues didn't give up. A serving ace by Jessie Rehwald gave the Lady Blues a 25-24 lead. After a kill by Brittney Deveaux, the Lady Blues grabbed the second set 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Lady Blues took an early 9-3 lead in the third set, causing a Fighting Scots timeout. Midway through, the Lady Blues were up 16-9. The Fighting Scots scored 3 points in a row to make the score 11-16, causing Coach Poitier to take a timeout. The Fighting Scots pushed to get within 2 points, 17-15, but the Lady Blues endured the run to win the third and final set, 25-20.
The attacks were spread out amongst eight different players. There were 3 Lady Blues that had 8 kills in the match. Sophomore Brittney Deveaux with 1 error on 14 attempts and 7 block assists, Junior Tanasia Blake with 2 errors on 14 attempts and 3 block assists, and Junior Tyann Thomas with 6 errors on 20 attempts and 3 block assists.
Sophomore Brittany Bonamy (pictured) had 7 kills with 2 errors on 17 attempts. Junior Sashane Watson had 6 kills with 3 errors on 13 attempts and 5 block assists. Sophomore Alee Quint had 21 set assists and Sophomore Jessie Rehwald had 9 digs. Junior Leandrea Armbrister added in 2 serving aces.
The Lady Blues next match is tomorrow night, Oct. 21st at 6:30 p.m. against the University of Virginia-Wise Cavaliers (12-9).
